BYD plans to launch its Shark hybrid pickup truck in China after rolling it out in several overseas markets, a senior company executive said, marking the automaker’s latest step in expanding its new energy vehicle (NEV) portfolio at home.

Li Yunfei, general manager of brand and public relations at BYD, confirmed the plan on Chinese social media platform Weibo while responding to a user inquiry. “It’s in the planning stages and will be launched sooner or later,” Li wrote.

The Shark made its global debut in Mexico on May 14, 2024 — a rare move for BYD, which typically launches new models domestically first. Analysts said the decision reflects restrictive Chinese regulations that limit pickup truck access in urban areas, keeping the segment relatively small.

According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), pickup truck sales in China reached 369,000 units between January and August, up 7% year-on-year. Sales of new energy pickups surged 536% in the same period to 49,000 units, though the category remains a fraction of China’s broader NEV market, which logged 8.8 million retail sales, up 23.4% year-on-year.

Built on BYD’s DMO platform — with “DM” referring to dual mode and “O” to off-road capability — the Shark measures 5,457 mm long, 1,971 mm wide, and 1,925 mm high, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm. It features a dual-motor setup producing over 430 horsepower, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 160 km/h.

The upcoming domestic launch would allow BYD to tap into China’s fast-growing but still niche hybrid and electric pickup market, while further strengthening its position as a leading global NEV manufacturer.
