BYD has begun accepting pre-orders for its Xia MPV, following the model’s debut at the Chengdu Auto Show in late August. While the company’s head of sales for the Dynasty lineup, Lu Tian, made the announcement on Weibo, no official pricing details have been released yet. The Xia MPV is set to expand BYD’s product offerings, which currently include its Dynasty and Ocean series, neither of which feature MPVs.
The Xia marks a new model series for the BYD brand, aligning with the tradition of naming models after Chinese dynasties. The Xia dynasty, considered the first recorded dynasty in Chinese history, joins other BYD models named after dynasties such as Han, Tang, Qin, Song, and Yuan.
Features and Platform
The Xia MPV is built on BYD’s DM 5.0 platform, which focuses on plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology. It is powered by the company’s fifth-generation DM hybrid system, announced earlier this year, which promises improved fuel efficiency. The MPV also incorporates BYD’s DiSus-C intelligent vibration-damping body control system, part of the DiSus technology suite introduced in April 2023.
In terms of dimensions, the Xia MPV measures 5,145 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,805 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,045 mm. Despite its size, the vehicle is designed to deliver low energy consumption and competitive acceleration, according to Lu.
Market Position and Expected Pricing
The Xia MPV is expected to compete in the RMB 300,000 ($42,780) price range, with earlier reports suggesting a reference price between RMB 289,800 and RMB 350,000. This positions it slightly below BYD’s Denza D9 MPV, which is priced from RMB 339,800 to RMB 606,600.
Equipped with BYD’s DiPilot intelligent driver assistance system and DiLink 150 cockpit system, the Xia MPV aims to offer advanced features that cater to modern driving needs. The vehicle is expected to go on sale before the end of the year.
