BYD, the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant, has officially launched its Dolphin electric vehicle (EV) in Thailand, as part of its strategy to expand into new markets. Collaborating with Thai partner Rêver Automotive, BYD hosted a grand launch event on July 6 to unveil the Dolphin model to local customers.
Thailand will have the opportunity to experience the Dolphin in both standard range and extended range versions, priced at 699,999 baht ($19,880) and 859,999 baht respectively. This marks another milestone for the Dolphin, which initially debuted in China on August 29, 2021, with a starting price of RMB 116,800 ($16,140) in its home market. Notably, the Dolphin is the first vehicle built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 and serves as the inaugural product of the Ocean series.
Earlier this year, on March 21, BYD presented the standard range version of the Dolphin at the esteemed 44th Bangkok International Motor Show, garnering significant attention and interest. Building upon its solid foundation, BYD aims to bolster its presence in Thailand by expanding its sales and aftersales network, planning to open 60 BYD stores in the country by the end of this month, as stated by the NEV maker during the recent launch event.
With the Dolphin’s introduction, BYD has now launched two models in Thailand, contributing to a cumulative delivery count of over 15,000 units. Previously, BYD introduced the Atto 3 (Yuan Plus) in Thailand in October 2022. While the Atto 3 serves as BYD’s first global model, the Dolphin represents the company’s ambition to extend its reach across the globe.
Beyond Thailand, BYD has made significant strides in other international markets. On March 9, the company unveiled four models, including the Dolphin, Tang EV, Atto 3, and Han EV, in Jordan. Further expansion followed, with BYD introducing the Han EV, Yuan Plus EV, and Dolphin models in Quito, Ecuador, during a brand launch on May 3. Additionally, the Dolphin made its debut in Hong Kong on May 24, captivating local consumers.
In recent weeks, BYD has demonstrated its commitment to global expansion by entering the Australian, Brazilian, and Singaporean markets with the Dolphin, marking a series of successful ventures in quick succession.
BYD’s dedication to the NEV industry is evident in its impressive sales figures. In June alone, the company sold 253,046 NEVs, with the Dolphin accounting for 31,140 units. Impressively, BYD recorded a 3.26 percent increase in overseas NEV sales, reaching 10,536 units in June compared to 10,203 units in May. With its relentless pursuit of innovation and expanding market presence, BYD is solidifying its position as a leader in the global NEV landscape.
