Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant, BYD, has introduced its compact electric vehicle (EV) Dolphin in Malaysia, marking its second model in the country following the Atto 3. The Dolphin was launched locally at an event on July 27 in collaboration with Sime Darby Motors, BYD’s Malaysian distributor, as announced in a recent press release.
In Malaysia, the BYD Dolphin is available in two versions, with starting prices of 99,900 ringgit ($22,138) and 124,900 ringgit, respectively. By comparison, the Dolphin is offered in three versions in China, with current starting prices ranging from RMB 116,800 ($16,270) to RMB 136,800.
The Dolphin, which debuted in China on August 29, 2021, boasts dimensions of 4,125 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width, 1,570 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.
By launching the Atto 3 in December of the previous year, BYD made its official entry into the Malaysian passenger car market. Since then, the Atto 3 has garnered significant popularity in the Malaysian EV market, positioning BYD as the leading brand for EV sales in the country.
Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia-Pacific auto sales division, expressed the company’s commitment to expanding accessibility to its products and services across Malaysia in collaboration with its partners.
BYD had initially entered the Malaysian market in 2014, focusing on commercial vehicles and local assembly of its electric buses. However, in October 2022, BYD signed a deal with Sime Darby Motors to import its passenger cars, leading to the successful launch of the Atto 3 in December of the same year.
With the introduction of the Dolphin, BYD aims to further solidify its presence in the Southeast Asian market, capitalizing on the growing demand for electric vehicles and solidifying its reputation as a major player in the global EV industry.
