BYD, the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer, has unveiled its all-electric MPV, the BYD M6, at the 31st GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). This marks the debut of BYD’s first MPV model in Indonesia and the first all-electric MPV in the local market, according to a press release issued yesterday.
The M6 is available in both 7-seat and 6-seat configurations, with prices ranging from Indonesian Rupiah 379 million to 429 million. This launch reflects BYD’s commitment to expanding its presence in Indonesia and addressing the growing demand for eco-friendly mobility solutions in the region, said Eagle Zhao, general manager of BYD Indonesia.

It is noteworthy that the M6 is not offered in BYD’s home market of China, where the company previously introduced a gas-powered version of the M6 in July 2010. BYD discontinued production of combustion engine vehicles in March 2022, focusing exclusively on plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles.

Since the discontinuation of the gas-powered M6, BYD has concentrated on other models such as the Song Max DM-i, launched in March 2022, and the Denza-branded D9, which has achieved significant sales in China. The D9, a key MPV model, sold over 10,000 units per month for the past four months, including 10,186 units in June.

In addition to the M6, BYD has introduced new trims for the Dolphin and Atto 3 models in Indonesia, namely the Dolphin Dynamic and BYD Atto 3 Advanced. The Atto 3 is known as the Yuan Plus in China.
BYD entered the Indonesian market in January, launching the Seal, Dolphin, and Atto 3, and plans to invest $1.3 billion in a new plant with a capacity of 150,000 vehicles, slated to start production in 2026. Currently, BYD vehicles in Indonesia are imported, with the company delivering its first 1,000 units on July 2.
In June, BYD reported sales of 341,658 NEVs, a 35.02% increase year-on-year. Overseas sales reached 26,995 vehicles, up 156.22% year-on-year but down 28.01% from May.
