BYD has launched the Yuan Up DM-i hybrid SUV in Europe under the local name Atto 2 DM-i, expanding its offerings in one of its most competitive overseas markets. The company also unveiled a long-range battery electric version of the model, branded the Atto 2 Comfort.

The move marks a strategic shift for the Chinese new energy vehicle manufacturer, which only sells the Yuan Up as a battery electric model in China.

BYD said the introduction of a hybrid variant in Europe reflects its effort to tailor technologies to regional preferences. “BYD is responding to European consumers’ diverse mobility needs by offering both BEV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle models,” the company said in a statement.

Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice president, said the compact SUV has gained strong traction since its European debut earlier this year. “Since its launch in Europe, the compact SUV has won the favor of many European consumers,” she said, adding that the company introduced hybrid and extended-range options based on user feedback.

The Atto 2 DM-i is the first plug-in hybrid in the Yuan family and features BYD’s in-house DM-i super hybrid system. The model offers an electric-only range of up to 90 km, with a combined range of up to 1,000 km when fully charged and fueled. The BEV variant, the Atto 2 Comfort, delivers a WLTP range of 430 km, about 100 km more than the entry model.

The Yuan lineup remains one of BYD’s best-selling series. In October, sales reached 48,902 units, though down 12.73% from a year earlier, according to data from CnEVPost. BYD currently sells passenger vehicles in 33 European countries and plans to expand its dealership network to 1,000 outlets by the end of the year.
