Chinese battery and electric vehicle maker BYD said on Wednesday its energy storage division has signed a cooperation agreement with Poland-based Greenvolt Power to develop a battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Poland.

The project, with a total capacity of up to 1.6 gigawatt-hours (GWh), marks another step in BYD’s expansion into international energy storage markets. The partnership covers the design and operation of two energy storage facilities with a combined capacity of 400 megawatts (MW)/1.6 GWh, the company said in a statement.

Construction of the project has begun and is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2026. BYD will supply its MC Cube-T energy storage system, which incorporates its cell-to-system (CTS) integration technology to reduce space requirements and simplify installation.

“This project highlights the growing role of energy storage in stabilizing Europe’s power grids and accelerating the transition to renewable energy,” BYD said in its statement.

Greenvolt, a renewable energy company, is expanding its energy storage program in Europe, aiming to strengthen its position as a major developer of BESS projects globally.

BYD is one of the world’s largest battery manufacturers, with an installed capacity of 194.7 GWh for power and energy storage batteries in 2024, a 29% increase from the previous year. In the first two months of 2025, BYD’s installed power and energy storage battery volume reached 32.2 GWh, up 79% year-on-year.

The agreement comes as European nations look to expand energy storage infrastructure to support renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, ensuring grid stability amid increasing electrification demands.
