BYD has entered into a partnership with Chinese electric two-wheeler manufacturer TAILG Technology Group to extend its battery technology beyond electric vehicles (EVs). TAILG announced the collaboration during a product launch event on Thursday, marking it as the first major partnership of its kind in the electric two-wheeler industry.

The partnership will focus on developing batteries that can match the lifespan of electric two-wheelers, addressing common challenges related to battery durability in these vehicles. TAILG noted that, “The two companies will work together to address the challenges faced by two-wheeler batteries and collaborate on the development of BYD batteries that can achieve the same lifespan as two-wheeler bodies.”

Additionally, the two companies plan to use cloud-based data to create a safety system aimed at enhancing the overall safety of electric two-wheelers. Improvements to the structure of the batteries will also be a key area of focus, according to TAILG.

Founded in 2003, TAILG is one of the largest electric two-wheeler manufacturers in China, with more than 30,000 sales outlets and products sold in over 90 countries. BYD operates its battery business through its subsidiary FinDreams, which has developed lithium-ion batteries since 1996. BYD is the world’s second-largest manufacturer of EV power batteries, holding a 16.4% share of the global market in the first three quarters of 2023, according to SNE Research.

China’s electric two-wheeler market has seen significant growth, with 350 million units in operation as of 2023. However, safety concerns have been raised due to incidents involving battery fires. A notable event in February 2023, which resulted in fatalities from a fire in a residential building, underscored the need for improved safety measures. In response, FinDreams has been exploring ways to improve the safety and use of batteries, including the potential for safer indoor battery storage solutions. The company plans to continue investing in research and development within the two-wheeler sector.
