BYD reported record sales of 373,083 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in August, surpassing the previous record of 342,383 units set in July. This marks a 35.97% increase year-on-year and an 8.97% rise from the prior month, driven by continued growth in its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) segment.
Passenger NEVs accounted for the majority of sales, with 370,854 units sold in August, reflecting a 35.31% year-on-year increase and an 8.82% gain from July. Commercial NEV sales also saw significant growth, with 2,229 units sold in August, up 643% year-on-year and 40.72% from the previous month.
BYD’s passenger BEVs saw a modest increase, with 148,470 units sold in August, up 1.95% year-on-year and 14.21% from July. The company’s PHEV segment continued its strong performance, selling 222,384 units, marking the sixth consecutive monthly record since March. This represents a 73.12% year-on-year increase and a 5.5% rise from July.
“The strong growth in PHEV sales can be attributed to the increased production capacity of models equipped with our latest DM 5.0 technology,” a BYD spokesperson said. The DM 5.0 hybrid technology, unveiled in May, offers lower fuel consumption and has been a key factor in the company’s recent success.
BYD also reported a 25.69% year-on-year increase in overseas sales, with 31,451 vehicles sold in international markets in August, representing a 4.79% increase from July.
