BYD Achieves 313,245 NEV Sales in April, Marking 48.96% Year-on-Year Growth

BYD, a leading Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer, reported further sales growth in April, marking the second-highest monthly sales figures on record.

In April, BYD sold 313,245 NEVs, reflecting a 48.96 percent increase from the same period last year and a 3.57 percent increase from March, according to the company’s latest figures.

Following its decision to cease production and sales of vehicles powered solely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, BYD has shifted its focus to producing plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

BYD’s NEV sales include both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Sales of passenger NEVs totaled 312,048 units in April, up 48.97 percent year-on-year and 3.45 percent from March. Meanwhile, commercial NEVs sold 1,197 units in April, marking a 44.57 percent increase from both a year ago and March.

Among passenger NEVs, BEVs accounted for 134,465 units sold in April, reflecting a 28.84 percent year-on-year increase but a 3.89 percent decrease from March. Passenger PHEVs saw strong performance, with 177,583 units sold in April, up 68.96 percent year-on-year and 9.8 percent from March.

In April, BYD achieved a record-breaking 41,011 vehicle sales in overseas markets, surpassing the previous record set in March (38,434). This marks a 176.6 percent increase year-on-year and a 6.71 percent increase from March. BYD first reported its overseas NEV sales figures in July 2022.

As China’s largest NEV company, BYD also holds the position of the country’s second-largest power battery maker. The company’s installed base of power and energy storage batteries reached approximately 12.559 GWh in April, up 26.17 percent year-on-year and 6.78 percent from March.

In the January-April period, BYD sold a total of 939,508 NEVs, marking a 23.24 percent increase year-on-year. Passenger NEV sales reached 936,446 units, up 23.64 percent year-on-year, while commercial NEV sales reached 3,062 units, down 38.60 percent.
