Brighton & Hove City Council has selected EV charge point operator Believ to deliver up to 208 new rapid and ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging bays across the city, significantly expanding its public charging infrastructure. Construction of the new chargers is expected to begin in late 2025, pending final contract approval.

The new rollout is set to increase the number of rapid charging bays in the city fourfold. Most of the chargers will be installed in public car parks, with Believ taking responsibility for installation, operation, and long-term maintenance under the contract.

The chargers will comply with PAS 1899 accessibility standards, aiming to ensure usability by the widest range of users. While the company has not disclosed exact charger capacities, it stated that the ultra-rapid chargers will provide a 20% to 80% charge in 15 to 20 minutes, while standard rapid chargers will offer the same in 45 to 60 minutes.

“Brighton & Hove is a fantastic, thriving city with ambitious plans for net zero transport, and we’re delighted to be a part of these plans,” said Guy Barlett, CEO of Believ. “The city has a high proportion of residents without access to a driveway or means to privately charge their vehicles… making robust public charging infrastructure essential.”

The announcement follows Believ’s £300 million investment round and its acquisition of charge point software company Switch EV earlier this year, as it seeks to accelerate its footprint across the UK’s growing EV charging sector.
