Bosch eBike Systems has unveiled its first hub motor for electric bicycles, marking a significant expansion beyond the mid-drive motors that have long defined the company’s product lineup.

The new drive unit, called Hub Line, is designed specifically for urban e-bikes and is accompanied by the launch of the PowerTube 360, the most compact battery in Bosch’s portfolio to date. The company also introduced new connectivity, display, and security features aimed at city riders.

Bosch Expands Beyond Mid-Drive Motors

Bosch eBike Systems has traditionally focused on mid-drive motor technology, which dominates much of the premium e-bike market.

With the launch of the Hub Line motor, the company is entering the hub-drive segment for the first time, targeting manufacturers seeking lighter and more discreet e-bike designs.

The motor weighs 2.3 kilograms and measures approximately 10 centimetres in diameter. Bosch said the compact design allows for greater integration into urban bicycles while maintaining a conventional bicycle appearance.

According to the company, the Hub Line delivers 45 Nm of torque and uses sensor-based controls to provide responsive pedal assistance.

Designed for Urban Riding

Bosch said the motor is intended to offer a natural riding experience for city commuters.

When the bicycle exceeds 25 km/h, the motor disengages completely, allowing riders to pedal without noticeable resistance from the electric drive system.

The company said the design prioritizes lightweight construction, agility, and seamless integration into urban mobility applications.

New PowerTube 360 Battery Targets Lightweight E-Bikes

Alongside the Hub Line motor, Bosch introduced the PowerTube 360 battery.

The battery measures 6.8 centimetres in diameter, making it the slimmest battery pack the company has developed for e-bikes.

With a capacity of 360 Wh and a weight of 2.1 kilograms, the battery is designed to support daily urban transportation while enabling slimmer frame designs.

Bosch said the battery can provide more than 50 miles (approximately 80 kilometres) of range under typical urban riding conditions.

For riders requiring additional range, the system is compatible with Bosch’s DualBattery technology, allowing a second battery to be added.

Depending on the bicycle manufacturer’s design, the PowerTube 360 can either be removable for charging or permanently integrated into the frame.

New Connectivity and Security Features

The product launch also includes updates to Bosch’s smart e-bike ecosystem.

Among the additions are a new generation of the Bosch ConnectModule anti-theft system, a compact LED controller, and the Intuvia 200 display.

The company said the new components are intended to improve integration, security, and ease of use while making connected e-bike features available to a broader range of users.

Bosch Targets Growing Urban E-Bike Market

Claus Fleischer, Managing Director of Bosch eBike Systems, said the new products are designed to support a new generation of city-focused electric bicycles.

“With our new features related to the Hub Line, we are ushering in a new era of urban eBikes. They are not only light and agile and excite with a clear and modern design language, but also revolutionise the riding experience in the city. At the same time, we are making connected eBiking accessible to even more people.”

Fleischer added that users would continue to benefit from Bosch’s broader smart e-bike platform.

“From the usual Bosch quality and durability to intuitive digital services and reliable support – all from a single source and engineered in Germany.”

The launch reflects growing demand for lightweight urban e-bikes, a segment where manufacturers increasingly prioritize discreet designs, lower weight, and integrated digital features alongside electric assistance.
