BMW is expanding its Neue Klasse electric vehicle lineup with the new iX4, a sporty SUV coupé positioned between the iX3 and the upcoming larger iX5. The model will be offered in three all-wheel-drive variants, with the range starting at €70,900.

The BMW iX4 40 xDrive and iX4 50 xDrive will be available to order ahead of the planned market launch in March 2027. The high-performance iX4 M60 xDrive is scheduled to open for orders in January 2027, bringing a maximum system output of 450 kW and a claimed driving range of up to 777 km.

Three All-Wheel-Drive Variants

All three versions of the BMW iX4 use an electric motor on each axle to provide all-wheel drive. The iX4 40 xDrive produces 275 kW and 520 Nm of torque, while the iX4 50 xDrive delivers 345 kW and 645 Nm.

The two variants accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and 4.9 seconds, respectively. Both have a maximum speed of 210 km/h.

The range-topping iX4 M60 xDrive increases output to 450 kW and torque to 875 Nm. BMW quotes a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 240 km/h.

Battery Capacity and Fast-Charging Performance

The iX4 uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology and an 800-volt electrical architecture. Charging performance and driving range vary according to the battery configuration.

The larger 108.7 kWh battery supports DC charging at up to 400 kW and provides a claimed maximum range of 828 km. BMW says a 10-minute charging session can add enough energy for up to 387 km of driving.

The smaller 82.6 kWh battery supports charging at up to 300 kW and offers a maximum range of 638 km. According to BMW, ten minutes of charging can add up to 301 km of range.

Both battery versions can charge from 10% to 80% in 21 minutes under suitable conditions. Standard AC charging capacity is 11 kW, with an optional 22 kW system. The iX4 also supports bidirectional charging for vehicle-to-load (V2L), vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications.

Sport-Oriented Chassis and Standard Equipment

BMW is equipping the iX4 with the M Sport package as standard. The package includes distinctive exterior styling, 20-inch alloy wheels, an M Sport braking system with blue brake callipers and a sport steering wheel.

The vehicle measures 4.78 metres long, 1.90 metres wide and 1.60 metres high. Its kerb weight ranges from 2,260 kg to 2,380 kg, depending on the configuration.

The chassis combines an adaptive lightweight design with a double-joint front axle and a five-link rear axle featuring separate springs and dampers. BMW’s Heart of Joy control system works alongside the Driving Stack and BMW Dynamic Performance Control to manage the powertrain and vehicle dynamics. The manufacturer says the system processes driving-dynamics functions ten times faster than previous systems.

Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse, BMW Compact and Mid-size, said the model expands the company’s electric lineup with a design focused on sporty proportions and technology.

“With the new all-electric BMW iX4, we are expanding the Neue Klasse portfolio with a particularly emotional vehicle. Its striking proportions, elegant coupé silhouette and the technologies of the Neue Klasse combine to create a unique character.”

Interior, Displays and Driver Assistance

The cabin features sport-oriented seats with a memory function and BMW’s Travel & Comfort System as standard. Sports and multifunction seats, along with rear-seat heating, are available as options. The rear seatback folds in a 40:20:40 configuration.

BMW says the panoramic glass roof and sloping coupé roofline do not compromise interior space, citing the vehicle’s underlying architecture.

The driver-focused cockpit includes a 3D head-up display, a panoramic display spanning the dashboard and a 17.9-inch central screen. The latest version of BMW’s operating system supports personalisation of sound, lighting, displays and drivetrain settings.

AI-supported driver-assistance systems provide partially automated driving and parking functions. Equipment and functionality may vary by market and configuration.

BMW iX4 M60 xDrive Adds 450 kW Performance

The iX4 M60 xDrive brings additional performance and model-specific equipment to the lineup. Its dual-motor powertrain produces 450 kW and 875 Nm, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. BMW quotes a maximum driving range of 777 km for the variant.

Standard exterior equipment includes 21-inch alloy wheels, a black kidney grille and distinctive lighting signatures. The cabin features electrically adjustable M Sport seats with 10-way adjustment, an M-specific display with a power meter, and an M Sport steering wheel with a 12 o’clock marker and paddle shifters.

The M60 also receives an adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers, sport steering and an M limited-slip differential on the rear axle. Two dedicated driving modes, M Sport and M Sport Plus, are included.

Market Launch and Positioning

The BMW iX4 will join the expanding Neue Klasse family as the brand develops its all-electric portfolio across different vehicle segments. Its SUV-coupé body style places it between conventional SUV practicality and a more sloping roofline, while the three-variant lineup covers a range of performance levels.

The iX4 40 xDrive and iX4 50 xDrive are scheduled to reach the market in March 2027. Orders for the iX4 M60 xDrive are expected to open in January 2027, ahead of its market introduction.
