BMW, the iconic German automaker, is making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) industry with its latest breakthrough in battery cell technology. The company’s newly developed Gen 6 battery cells, which are poised to underpin its upcoming Neue Klasse-based EVs from 2025, promise a significant leap forward in energy density, range, and environmental impact. Notably, BMW asserts that these cells surpass the technology found in Tesla’s current models.

The milestone achievement came as BMW initiated sample production of these cutting-edge battery cells at the BMW Group Cell Manufacturing Competence Center in Parsdorf, Germany. The innovative cells, boasting a 46 mm diameter and available in two heights—95 mm or 120 mm, depending on the version—have set new standards in the EV battery arena.

BMW’s Gen 6 cells are said to deliver a remarkable 20% increase in energy density, providing up to 30% more range compared to the company’s current battery cells. Moreover, these cells contribute to a substantial 60% reduction in carbon emissions associated with production. As a result, Neue Klasse models powered by these cells could achieve a remarkable range of up to 500 miles, equivalent to approximately 800 kilometers. These advancements are attributed to a higher nickel content and lower cobalt content on the cathode side, coupled with increased silicon content on the anode side.

In a bold statement, BMW Group production chief Milan Nedeljkovic stated, “Tesla needs to close the gap with us.” He emphasized the automaker’s confidence in its battery design and its alignment with the company’s vision of driving performance.

While BMW has spearheaded the development of these groundbreaking cells, large-scale production will be entrusted to suppliers Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL) and Eve Energy, which will operate in six different factories. Two of these facilities will be strategically located in Europe, China, and North America, allowing for global distribution and supply.

Nedeljkovic explained BMW’s meticulous approach to perfecting the battery cell recipe at the Cell Manufacturing Competence Center, highlighting the importance of chemistry and physics in cell development. The company’s aim is to fine-tune the manufacturing process to ensure that it complements the cell’s recipe, ultimately delivering the desired performance.

The automotive industry is witnessing an electrifying race, with BMW’s Gen 6 battery cells emerging as a game-changer, challenging Tesla’s supremacy and propelling the EV sector into an era of enhanced efficiency and sustainability.
