BMW has stopped accepting new orders for its iX3 electric SUV, as production of the current model is set to wind down ahead of the arrival of its successor. The company revealed that the remaining units of the iX3 are either sold or in production, and no further custom configurations will be offered.
A representative from BMW confirmed to Inside EVs, “We have therefore decided to no longer accept orders for individually configured vehicles. Accordingly, the vehicle is no longer available in the configurator.” Production of the iX3 is expected to conclude by the second quarter of 2025.
The iX3, based on BMW’s CLAR platform originally developed for combustion engines, has faced increasing pressure from competitors, especially with its lack of all-wheel-drive options and an aging battery system. Despite its efficient 210 kW motor, the iX3’s range and charging capabilities lag behind newer electric models. The vehicle’s production in China also leaves it vulnerable to looming tariffs when imported to the EU.
BMW is preparing to launch the iX3’s successor on the Neue Klasse platform by the end of 2025. This new architecture, built with electric mobility in mind, will introduce advanced features such as an 800-volt system and a switch to round battery cells. The first model in the Neue Klasse will be manufactured in Hungary and is part of BMW’s broader strategy to transition all its electric vehicles to the new platform, from the 2 Series to the flagship 7 Series.
