BMW and Toyota are reportedly working together to launch a new model powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, with the first model possibly coming out as early as 2025.
A BMW official told Nikkei Asia during an interview that Germany sees clear benefits from hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, especially in the case of larger SUVs.
Toyota could be the most obvious choice for a partner as Japan has been developing the technology since the early 1990s.
“We have various projects that we are working on with Toyota. We see that hydrogen fuel cell technology is very relevant for larger SUVs,” said BMW Head of Sales Pieter Nota
While specific model details are not yet known, BMW has showcased the Hydrogen iX5 concept vehicle at last year’s Munich Motor Show and production in exclusive numbers is expected to begin soon.
