National charging network Be.EV has teamed up with Formula Space and Derbyshire Police to tackle the rising problem of EV charging cable theft in Chesterfield. In response to recent incidents, Be.EV has launched the “Charging Hub Intelligent Protection” initiative (CHIP) to deter vandalism and ensure charging locations remain accessible for drivers.
Charging cable theft costs the industry over £500,000 annually due to replacement and repair expenses. Be.EV is urging the wider industry to adopt similar security measures at charging hubs nationwide.
The initiative was unveiled at the 85 Saltergate Charging Hub, featuring a mobile CCTV system monitored 24/7 and a tannoy system that warns potential vandals that their actions are being recorded. Be.EV has also installed SelectaDNA-protected cables, enabling police to trace stolen cables back to their origin.
Adrian Fielden-Gray, COO of Be.EV, highlighted the urgency of addressing the issue, stating, “Cable theft is an absolute nightmare for everyone – especially drivers.” He emphasized the need for collaboration to prevent vandalism.
PCSO Emma Shimwell from Derbyshire Police stressed the importance of cooperation between charge point operators and law enforcement, noting, “By installing systems like CCTV, cable DNA tracking, and 24/7 security monitoring, we can deter opportunistic thieves.”
Through the CHIP initiative, Be.EV aims to improve the security of charging stations and enhance the overall user experience for EV drivers.
