Detroit is now home to a pilot project testing a novel autonomous truck parking network, a joint venture between Robotic Research Autonomous Industries (RRAI) and Truck Specialized Information Services (TSIS). The project is poised to mark the advent of autonomous trucking in the Detroit area, spotlighting the transformative possibilities within the trucking industry.

RRAI contributes its AutoDrive-enabled vehicles to the partnership, originally designed for off-road military applications. The self-driving platform is engineered to facilitate multi-model autonomous driving capabilities, boasting the ability to operate without GPS, special signage, or road markings. The initiative kicks off with RRAI’s AutoDrive-enabled autonomous trucks maneuvering containers within TSIS’ Detroit parking lot, with future plans to transport materials from the rail yard to the lot.

The companies aim to demonstrate the immediate practical value of autonomy, emphasizing its potential to enhance efficiency, safety, and throughput in truck yards. Success in this pilot project could pave the way for the autonomous model’s expansion to other TSIS truck ports across the United States and Canada.

TSIS outlines broader ambitions, intending to develop 35 additional truck ports strategically positioned around rail yards, inland ports, and commercial ports. Leveraging autonomous technology at each location, the goal is to optimize operational efficiencies and potentially revolutionize the landscape of trucking logistics.
