AT&T and Rivian Forge Partnership for Electric Fleet Vehicles in Upcoming Pilot Program

AT&T is poised to initiate a pilot program in early 2024, taking delivery of Rivian fleet vehicles as part of an agreement between the two companies. This collaboration signals a strategic move for AT&T to reduce transport emissions and potentially cut down on maintenance costs. Simultaneously, it suggests a shift for Rivian, indicating the conclusion of its exclusivity arrangement with Amazon and the potential for increased business in the fleet sector.

Although the agreement does not specify the precise number of vehicles involved, AT&T emphasizes a substantial order encompassing both Rivian’s Commercial Van and its R1 vehicles, including the R1S and R1T models. AT&T aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035 through this initiative.

Hardmon Williams, SVP of AT&T Connected Solutions, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “This pilot is another important step in our ongoing efforts toward sustainability, reducing our carbon footprint, and embracing a cleaner future for our operations.”

Rivian’s VP of Strategy and Fleet, Dagan Mishoulam, highlighted the significance of addressing emissions from commercial vans, stating, “Itā€™s imperative that we take action as soon as possible to help mitigate these emissions.” Mishoulam underscored Rivian’s commitment to sustainability and technological advancement, emphasizing the continuous improvement of their vehicles through over-the-air updates.

While this collaboration signifies the end of Rivian’s exclusivity with Amazon, AT&T clarified that it remains the exclusive connectivity partner for Rivian. The connectivity aspect enables Rivian to perform over-the-air updates on its vehicles. Positioned to engage new fleet customers, Rivian could potentially witness a surge in orders and demand.

As Rivian ventures into a crucial new year, the company plans to preview its R2 platform in 2024 and aims to make it available for sale at a price range of $40-$60k by 2025, with deliveries commencing the following year. The ability to scale up production in the interim will be instrumental in providing Rivian with increased flexibility for the future.
