Arriva, a British public transport operator, has secured a significant contract to manage rail and bus services in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The ten-year contract, commencing in December 2025, mandates the deployment of a new fleet of electric buses, contributing to the province’s goal of emission-free public transport by 2030.
Arriva, which has been operating in Gelderland for several years, will expand its services in the province with the introduction of around 100 electric buses from the outset of the contract. The contract is valued at approximately 2 billion euros and includes a modernization plan for 24 trains, along with the procurement of an additional 13 trains by 2028.
The move aligns with Gelderland’s ambition to reduce transport emissions, complementing Arriva’s existing fleet of nine hydrogen buses. The new electric buses are expected to replace the current fleet, enhancing the province’s push toward cleaner public transportation.
In addition to Gelderland, Arriva is also active in other Dutch regions. The company recently secured public transport concessions in West Brabant, ordering 157 electric buses from VDL and 30 battery-electric buses from Solaris for deployment there. Arriva continues to expand its presence across the Netherlands as part of its broader sustainability goals.
