Archer Aviation and Southwest Airlines have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore the development of electric air taxi networks using Archer’s eVTOL aircraft at California airports where Southwest operates. Archer Aviation manufactures electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The collaboration aims to develop a concept of operations for integrated electric air taxi networks to support California airports and nearby communities served by Southwest. This effort will involve coordination with Southwest employees and unions, including SWAPA, to ensure efficient operations. The initiative seeks to streamline the door-to-door passenger journey for Southwest customers.
Southwest, operating at 14 airports across California, is the state’s largest air carrier. Archer’s Midnight aircraft is designed to reduce 60-to-90-minute car commutes to an estimated 10-to-20-minute electric air taxi flight. The aircraft aims to offer a safe, low-noise, cost-competitive transportation option with no direct emissions.
Archer and Southwest plan to collaborate over the next few years as eVTOLs become operational. The integration of Archer’s aircraft and urban air mobility network with Southwest flights aims to enhance the first and last miles of the customer travel journey.
