Electric vehicle charging operator Allego and ride-hailing company Uber have agreed to offer drivers in the Netherlands discounts of up to 50% per kilowatt-hour at Allego’s nationwide high-power charging (HPC) network, with eligibility limited to off-peak periods.
Under the arrangement, reduced rates apply outside designated peak hours, which for the winter season are set between 10:00 and 17:00. This means Uber drivers can access discounted charging after 17:00 and before 10:00 the following day. Allego said the schedule reflects “typical charging habits before or after work,” though time windows may change with the seasons.
Standard pricing for DC charging in the Netherlands is about €0.793 per kWh, while AC charging ranges between €0.41 and €0.62 per kWh depending on location and capacity. At ultra-fast chargers, a blocking fee of €0.25 per minute applies after 45 minutes to discourage prolonged occupancy. The discount applies only to DC chargers, although drivers can access Allego’s broader AC network through the company’s app.
The initiative aims to reduce operating costs for electric ride-hailing drivers while encouraging charging outside peak demand periods to ease pressure on the electricity grid. However, the designated off-peak window includes late afternoon and evening hours, which are typically periods of high electricity consumption in many regions.
For Allego, the partnership could increase utilization of its charging infrastructure by attracting drivers with lower prices, potentially drawing traffic away from competing networks.
“This partnership makes smart charging tangible for taxi drivers: transparent pricing, no surcharges, and benefits aligned with daily driver behaviour,” said Emiel van Steensel, Head of Network Development at Allego Netherlands.
Uber said the agreement supports its broader sustainability goals. “Uber chooses Allego as a strong partner that significantly improves the charging experience for our drivers,” said Berenice van Gessel, General Manager Benelux at Uber. “With a large and reliable European network, this collaboration supports our goal to move passengers sustainably and affordably.”
Allego operates one of Europe’s extensive public charging networks, while Uber has been encouraging drivers to transition to electric vehicles through incentives and partnerships across key markets.
