Alfa Romeo, the renowned Italian automaker, is set to join the electric vehicle (EV) race with an ambitious plan to challenge BMW’s iX with an all-electric SUV, slated for release in 2027. The company’s CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, has provided insights into this electrifying venture, revealing the brand’s intention to make a significant impact in the luxury EV market.
This forthcoming electric SUV will be based on the STLA Large Platform, and it is designed to compete head-on with formidable rivals like BMW’s iX, the Porsche Cayenne EV, and an upcoming sporty crossover from Renault-owned Alpine. Alfa Romeo’s distinct focus for this new offering centers on on-road performance, a characteristic that aligns with the brand’s illustrious history of delivering engaging driving experiences. To optimize aerodynamic efficiency and extend its range, the vehicle is expected to feature a lower ride height compared to traditional SUVs.
The new SUV is poised to claim the title of Alfa Romeo’s flagship model, surpassing the next-generation all-electric Stelvio in terms of size and prominence, as reported by Autocar. With a clear target on the North American and Chinese markets, Alfa Romeo aims to carve a significant presence in regions where EV adoption is on the rise.
Imparato emphasized the need to look beyond Western Europe, citing small volumes and market uncertainties in the segment. This strategic shift towards the EV SUV segment reflects Alfa Romeo’s intent to expand its global footprint and capitalize on the growing demand for electric vehicles.
Underpinning this electrifying SUV is the STLA Large chassis, a platform that hints at exceptional performance potential. With the capacity to accommodate up to three electric motors, this Alfa Romeo EV may boast power figures that venture into four-digit territory. Despite its larger SUV stature, the company remains committed to delivering a thrilling driving experience, consistent with the brand’s heritage.
Practicality is not neglected in this endeavor, as the vehicle will leverage the platform’s 800V architecture, promising rapid charging capabilities. With the potential to recharge from 10 to 80 percent in just 30 minutes, the electric SUV is projected to offer an impressive range of around 500 miles (805 kilometers).
Furthermore, the forthcoming Alfa Romeo SUV is expected to incorporate Stellantis’ cutting-edge tech suite, the STLA Brain, which is likely to encompass features such as hands-free driving capabilities, an advanced infotainment system, and a digital experience that can rival industry leader Tesla.
This large SUV venture represents just one component of Alfa Romeo’s ambitious electrification strategy. The brand also has plans to introduce a sub-compact-sized crossover and is exploring the possibility of a Guilietta compact hatch replacement, marking a significant step towards a greener and more electrified future for the iconic Italian marque.
