The Chinese government has approved the construction of an electric car factory in collaboration with Audi and state-owned automaker FAW Group.
The planning regulator of Jilin Province in northeastern China said construction of the plant, which will be based in the provincial capital Changchun City, would begin in April 2022.
According to Chinese regulators, the car factory Audi – FAW will be operational in December 2024. with a production capacity of 150,000 electric cars per year. The total investment for the joint project is USD 3.3 billion.
A Reuters report at Antara quoted today, Wednesday, February 16, 2022, stated that the approval for the construction of the Audi – FAW electric car factory was granted on February 11, 2022.
Three electric car models will be produced at the plant, including the Audi e-tron electric SUV.
Volkswagen, Audi’s parent company, confirmed the Chinese agreement. “The Audi FAW NEV project is an important cornerstone of Audi’s electrification strategy in China,” said a Volkswagen spokesman.
Audi, a premium car manufacturer under Volkswagen, signed a memorandum of understanding with FAW in October 2020 to jointly produce premium electric vehicles (EVs) in China, the world’s largest auto market.
The FAW Group is Volkswagen’s long-standing partner in producing cars in China. The joint venture of FAW and Volkswagen, FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Company Ltd, was founded in 1991 in Changchun. The car factory, among others, produces Audi A4 L, Audi A6 L, Audi A6 L e-tron electric cars, Audi Q3, and Audi Q5 L.
