Starting in January 2025, BMW will fill all new diesel vehicles produced at its German plants with HVO 100, a sustainable fuel made from renewable raw materials such as cooking oil and residues.
In partnership with Finnish manufacturer Neste, the initiative is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with HVO 100 producing up to 90% fewer emissions compared to traditional fossil diesel.
BMW will implement the change at its plants in Munich, Dingolfing, Regensburg, and Leipzig, where new diesel models will leave the production line with a full tank of HVO 100, replacing the previous practice of filling vehicles with only five to eight liters.
This move is part of BMW’s broader sustainability efforts and follows the company’s use of HVO 100 in logistics trucks since March 2023.
Chairman Oliver Zipse emphasized the importance of this step for climate protection, noting that increasing the regenerative fuel share in the more than 250 million vehicles in Europe could significantly improve their CO2 balance. BMW has also joined the eFuel Alliance, a global group of over 170 companies working to advance the use of eFuels as an alternative to fossil fuels.
