Motor Coach Industries (MCI), a subsidiary of NFI Group, has delivered the first of nine battery-electric coaches from its Pembina, North Dakota plant, a facility previously slated for closure in 2025. Increased demand for MCI’s electric coaches has led to a strategic decision to keep the plant operational.

Chris Stoddart, President of North American Bus and Coach at NFI, highlighted the company’s investment in both infrastructure and workforce development to ensure a smooth transition to zero-emission coach production. “We are pleased to see these first electric coaches come off the assembly line in Pembina following a significant investment in training and infrastructure to support the transition to zero-emission,” he said. “Thank you to the over 120 team members at Pembina for your determination and dedication to MCI over the past few years. I look forward to welcoming more team members as we continue serving our customers.”

MCI has retrofitted its Pembina facility with new chargers, enhanced storage and commissioning areas, and implemented extensive workforce training. The plant, which opened in 1963, has been integral to MCI’s U.S. operations. “Since then, this facility has manufactured and delivered our market-leading products to our customers,” said Paul Soubry, NFI’s President and CEO. “I am thrilled that they delivered their first electric coach today, showcasing our evolution as a company and our commitment to clean and sustainable transportation solutions.”

MCI launched its first battery-electric luxury coach in 2021, a significant milestone in its shift toward sustainable transit solutions. Despite initial plans to shutter the Pembina facility, NFI’s recommitment underscores its confidence in the growing demand for zero-emission coaches. The company anticipates further enhancements to the plant and the addition of team members as it scales up production.
