BYD announced the production of its 10 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), a Denza Z9 sedan. The milestone vehicle was showcased at the 2024 Guangzhou Auto Show on November 15 and delivered to Feng Ji, CEO of Game Science, a video game development company.
The achievement aligns with BYD’s recent partnership with Game Science, established in October. The collaboration focuses on digitizing cultural relics and monuments to support restoration efforts. The Denza Z9, available in plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) versions, features BYD’s e3 technology, offering advanced drivetrain and steering capabilities. Deliveries of the Denza Z9 are expected to commence in early December, with the vehicle starting at RMB 334,800 ($46,270).
BYD, founded in 1995 as a battery manufacturer, entered the automotive market in 2003 and has since grown into a major automaker. The company introduced its first plug-in hybrid vehicle, the F3DM, in 2008 and has continued to develop hybrid and electric vehicle technologies. In 2024, BYD launched its fifth-generation DM hybrid platform, aimed at improving fuel efficiency and performance in PHEVs.
BYD transitioned away from traditional combustion-engine vehicles in 2022, focusing entirely on PHEVs and BEVs. The company reported 3.25 million NEV sales in the first ten months of 2024, reflecting a 36.49% year-on-year increase. BYD aims to achieve global deliveries of 6 million NEVs by 2026, with approximately 1.5 million units expected to be sold in international markets.
