Daimler Truck North America Introduces Electric Freightliner eCascadia for Logistics Operations

Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA) has launched its first electric Freightliner eCascadia as part of its logistics operations, contributing to efforts aimed at decarbonizing transportation. The electric truck will operate from the Detroit Diesel Corporation (Detroit) facility in Redford, Michigan.

The Freightliner eCascadia will facilitate logistics between an offsite warehouse in Detroit and the production facility, with operations managed by Load One LLC, a DTNA partner since 2018. The truck is designed to have a range of 220 miles and will be charged at the Detroit Logistics Center.

“Detroit’s operation is focused on driving efficiency in today’s market while preparing for growth over the coming years,” said Matt Pfaffenbach, Detroit plant manager. He emphasized the significance of partnerships, such as with Load One, in adapting to changes in the transportation industry, stating, “Investment in key partnerships, like our relationship with Load One, is critical to maintaining success as our industry transforms in the years to come.” Load One is recognized for its commitment to safety and on-time delivery performance.

The Detroit facility plays a key role in DTNA’s manufacturing operations, covering 38 acres and comprising 3.2 million square feet of production space, employing nearly 2,800 individuals in various functions. It produces components, including the electric powertrain for the eCascadia.

The introduction of the eCascadia aligns with DTNA’s strategy to integrate electric vehicles into its logistics network, following previous deployments in locations such as the Pacific Northwest, North Carolina, Arizona, and Mexico. DTNA’s sustainability goals include achieving CO₂-neutral production at all truck manufacturing plants by 2026.

The Portland truck manufacturing plant, where the eCascadia is produced, achieved CO₂-neutral production in 2020, reflecting ongoing efforts to reduce energy consumption and emissions. Additionally, DTNA is exploring solutions for battery lifecycle management, including repair, remanufacturing, repurposing, and recycling, as part of its commitment to sustainable practices in the supply chain.
