BYD’s Yangwang U7 Sedan to Feature Next-Gen Blade Battery with Enhanced Charging Capacity

BYD’s premium sub-brand Yangwang is set to introduce its next-generation blade battery in the upcoming U7 sedan, according to Wu Ying, editor-in-chief of local automotive news site Xchuxing. This advanced battery will provide faster charging and enhanced power output capabilities.

The second-generation blade battery will offer a charging multiplier exceeding 5.5 C and a discharging multiplier surpassing 14 C, Wu revealed in a post on Weibo. “Yangwang’s friend told me that I can get ready to experience the Yangwang U7,” he wrote, though he did not disclose additional details.

The 5.5 C rating indicates that the U7 battery could fully charge in approximately 11 minutes, delivering significant improvements in efficiency over previous iterations. The blade battery, introduced by BYD in 2020 with a lithium iron phosphate chemistry for improved safety, is used across the automaker’s NEV lineup but has not seen substantial updates until now. In comparison, competitors like CATL have been advancing similar battery technologies, with CATL’s Qilin Battery featuring a discharge multiplier of 16 C or 1,330 kW output.

The Yangwang U7 sedan, the second model under the luxury Yangwang label, was first showcased at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. Designed with four permanent magnet synchronous motors and an estimated power output exceeding 1,000 horsepower, the U7 aims to set new benchmarks in China’s ultra-luxury electric vehicle market.
