Chery to Launch All-Solid State Battery by 2026, Unveils Kunpeng Battery Brand

Chery announced on October 18 that it plans to launch an all-solid state battery in 2026 during the Chery Global Innovation Conference. The company also introduced its new Kunpeng battery brand, which will feature three battery series, all capable of 6C charging, enabling EVs to gain 400 km of range in just five minutes.

The solid-state battery technology is projected to achieve an energy density of 400 Wh/kg by the end of this year, increasing to 600 Wh/kg by 2025, with the first vehicle application anticipated in 2026. Chery aims for its solid-state batteries to provide electric vehicles (EVs) with a range of up to 1500 km, followed by initial batch production slated for 2027.

The Kunpeng brand will initially consist of three battery series: square lithium iron phosphate, square ternary, and large cylindrical ternary. Notably, all three series can support charging rates of up to 6C. According to Chery, this high charging capability means that drivers can add approximately 400 km of range in just five minutes.

The square lithium iron phosphate batteries offer an energy density of 120-160 Wh/kg and are designed for EVs with ranges of 200-600 km, as well as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) with an all-electric range of 100-200 km. These batteries can handle charging rates from 1C to 6C and operate effectively in ambient temperatures ranging from -30°C to 65°C.

The square ternary batteries cater to EVs with ranges of 600-800 km and PHEVs and EREVs with all-electric ranges of 150-300 km, featuring an energy density of 140-200 Wh/kg. They can operate in temperatures from -40°C to 65°C and support charging rates of 2C to 6C.

Lastly, the large cylindrical series is designed for EVs with ranges of 700-1200 km, as well as PHEVs and EREVs with all-electric ranges of 150-300 km, and supports charging rates of 2C to 6C.

The Kunpeng series boasts a lifespan of over 3,000 charging cycles and incorporates advanced energy-absorbing design technology that facilitates rapid directional pressure relief in just one second. Chery also showcased the durability of its cells, demonstrating that a cell with a cut corner could still function effectively.

In the near future, the Kunpeng battery series is expected to be integrated into Chery’s new energy vehicles (NEVs). The company reported sales of over 60,000 NEVs in September, part of a total of 244,534 units sold, with plans to reach 80,000 this month and 100,000 by year-end, according to Yin Tongyue, chairman of Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. Additionally, the SAIC General Motors joint venture has recently announced its own 6C batteries, set to be utilized starting in 2025.
