The updated Enviro200EV electric bus from Alexander Dennis is set to hit the market in 2025, with the company already identifying some of its first customers, including a confirmed order from Stagecoach for 54 units. The bus, a member of the Enviro EV family, will maintain its proven features while offering enhancements aimed at operational efficiency and passenger comfort.
Chris Gall, Group Engineering Director at Alexander Dennis, emphasized that the new model will retain much of the design and technology that made its predecessor one of Britain’s top-selling buses. “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” Gall said, explaining that the vehicle’s core features will remain, while sharing common parts with the Enviro EV lineup for simplified maintenance. “Operators will benefit from having fewer parts in the depot and streamlined solutions for the entire fleet,” he added.
The Enviro200EV will be offered in multiple length options, including 9.9 m, 10.9 m, 11.7 m, and a 10.4 m version designed to meet Transport for London (TfL) specifications. The bus will have a width of 2.47 metres, a gross vehicle weight of 17.2 tonnes, and smaller wheels to optimize the low-floor area. It will accommodate up to 92 passengers, with 43 seated, while the TfL variant will carry 78 passengers and feature 34 upper-level seats.
The bus will be powered by a 400 kWh battery using CATL’s lithium iron phosphate technology, contrasting with the lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide chemistry used in its sister models, the Enviro100EV and Enviro400EV. German supplier Voith will provide the drive system for the new bus.
Gall also noted that the development of the Enviro200EV placed a strong focus on the passenger experience, with a modern and high-quality interior design. This approach will carry over to other electric models in the lineup, enhancing the overall fleet consistency.
Paul Davies, president and managing director of Alexander Dennis, highlighted that the new model is expected to reduce energy consumption compared to heavier competitors, which will offer substantial savings in total cost of ownership (TCO). However, the final production location for the Enviro200EV has not been confirmed, with the possibility of some units being built outside the UK due to economic considerations. A decision on this is expected soon.
