Mercedes-Benz is preparing to develop a new electric supercar, inspired by last year’s Vision One-Eleven concept, which is expected to launch before the end of the decade. This upcoming model will mark the brand’s first battery-electric supercar since the Mercedes-Benz SLS Electric Drive and is anticipated to surpass the performance of the F1-powered AMG One.
The new supercar will likely be built on the AMG.EA architecture, designed to support vehicles with various lengths and wheelbases. This platform is set to debut with an electric replacement for the current AMG GT 4-Door and will feature an advanced 800-volt architecture.
Key technologies showcased in the Vision One-Eleven are expected to be integrated into the production model. This includes an advanced lithium-ion battery pack with cylindrical cells sourced from Sila Nanotechnologies, a partner of Mercedes for several years. Additionally, the supercar will utilize axial flux electric motors developed by British company Yasa, which was acquired by Mercedes in 2021.
According to Autocar, these new disc-shaped motors are approximately half the size and weight of the current motors used by AMG, while still producing up to 489 horsepower and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. Remarkably, each motor weighs just 53 lbs (24 kg).
Details about the new Mercedes-AMG supercar, which will compete with the all-electric Porsche Mission X hypercar, remain limited. Specific information regarding pricing and production numbers has not yet been disclosed. It is also uncertain how closely the final design will resemble the retro Vision One-Eleven, which draws inspiration from Mercedes’ C111 experimental concepts from the 1960s and ‘70s.
Despite these uncertainties, Mercedes-AMG chief executive Michael Schiebe is optimistic about customer acceptance of the electric powertrain.
“Customers who came to the brand because of the V8 did not come because they just wanted to have a big engine,” he stated. “They came because they loved the technology that we put into the car. So when it comes to electric driving, I’m pretty sure they will jump into that new technology because it will be the latest and greatest that you can get.”
