Glasgow-based Tual Technology has introduced a new swappable battery system for electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs), offering an innovative solution to the challenges of limited range and charging infrastructure for commercial electric vehicles. The companyâs PowerBank Pro-Charging system, available in 120kWh and 180kWh versions, can add up to 120 miles of range depending on the vehicle’s application.
The swappable batteries are designed to be exchanged in under five minutes, allowing operators to quickly resume operations with minimal downtime. Tualâs modular system is compatible with a range of vehicle sizes and has been developed in collaboration with major European fleet operators. “The transition to electric heavy goods vehicles is essential for achieving our environmental targets, but they are handicapped by limited range. This impacts the use cases and routes they can operate on, as the current charging infrastructure is simply not scaled for heavy goods vehicles,” said Philip Clarke, CEO and founder of Tual Technology. He added, “Our swappable Power Banks are designed to bridge this gap.”
While large-scale public megawatt charging networks for heavy-duty vehicles are still in development, Tualâs battery-swapping technology offers immediate benefits. These include the ability to upgrade and recycle batteries without replacing the entire vehicle, as well as pioneering new trucking routes not yet covered by future charging networks.
Tual Technology’s launch comes amid a global push for swappable battery systems, with companies like CATL and Mitsubishi Fuso recently testing similar solutions for electric trucks in China and Japan.
