Kodiak Robotics, a self-driving technology company, has partnered with Textron Systems to launch the RIPSAW M3, an autonomous ground vehicle designed for military applications. This vehicle integrates Kodiak’s AI-powered Kodiak Driver technology, marking a significant advancement in uncrewed robotic ground vehicles.
The collaboration, first announced in May, aimed to produce a purpose-built autonomous vehicle, which has now materialized in the form of the RIPSAW M3. Kodiak’s technology can be adapted for various vehicle types, previously demonstrated in freight trucks and a Ford F-150 prototype for the U.S. military.
The RIPSAW M3 is notable for being the first application of the Kodiak Driver in an autonomous tracked vehicle that operates without a human onboard. It is designed for high-risk military missions, including reconnaissance and tactical maneuvers, and is capable of navigating challenging terrains such as highways and dirt roads.
Key features of the RIPSAW M3 include Kodiak’s DefensePodsâhardware enclosures for essential sensors located at each corner of the vehicle, ensuring 360-degree visibility and quick changes in less than 10 minutes, which is advantageous in dynamic military environments. Additionally, the vehicle employs Assisted Autonomy technology, enabling remote control by soldiers for mission-critical tasks.
Both companies aim to explore opportunities with the U.S. Department of Defense and allied nations. David Phillips, senior vice president of Textron Systems, stated, “The RIPSAW M3 equipped with the Kodiak Driver is a transformative solution for military ground operations,” emphasizing its potential to enhance mission effectiveness and protect personnel.
Don Burnette, founder and CEO of Kodiak, remarked, “No other autonomous system can drive everywhere, from on-highway to off-road,” highlighting the vehicle’s versatility and the collaboration’s aim to provide exceptional support to military operations.
