Scottish airline Ecojet, set to begin operations by the end of the year, has signed a contract to purchase 22 hydrogen-electric ZA2000 engines from ZeroAvia. These engines are intended for retrofit into turboprop aircraft with 40 to 80 seats.
Based in Edinburgh, Ecojet aims to become the industryâs first all-electric airline, promoting carbon-free travel. The airline plans to start operations with conventionally powered aircraft by late 2024, serving routes to and from Edinburgh. Once the hydrogen-electric technology is certified, these aircraft will be retrofitted with the ZA2000 engines.

“Ecojet, the worldâs first electric airline is on a mission to make net-zero, emission-free air travel possible for the first time. Weâve moved one step closer by signing an agreement to purchase 22 hydrogen electric engines from ZeroAvia. This is nothing short of a revolution in aviation, the world has just moved a step closer towards a solution to sustainable air travel,â said Dale Vince, founder of Ecojet.
Initially, Ecojet will operate its first zero-emission aircraft using ZeroAviaâs smaller ZA600 engines, designed for aircraft with up to 20 seats. The airlineâs long-term goal is to build a fleet of larger regional aircraft to serve key domestic and shorter international routes.
ZeroAvia is dedicated to creating a cleaner future for aviation through electric propulsion. The company focuses on hydrogen-electric propulsion systems and has submitted its first hydrogen propulsion system for certification for aircraft with up to 20 seats. It is also developing a larger engine for aircraft with 40 to 80 seats.
