Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has secured a significant order from the Azerbaijani government for 160 units of its K9UD electric buses, according to a company press release. The order marks a milestone as BYD continues to strengthen its position in the global market for electric commercial vehicles.
The 12-meter long K9UD electric buses will be delivered in batches starting this month, with some expected to be in operation during the upcoming 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku this November. Azerbaijan plans to purchase an additional 200 electric buses annually from BYD between 2025 and 2028, with intentions to eventually assemble the vehicles locally.
BYD, renowned for its electric mobility solutions since proposing city bus electrification in 2010, boasts a global presence in over 400 cities across more than 70 countries. The company’s K9UD model features a 422-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, offering a maximum range of 450 km and powered by dual 150 kW electric motors.
The collaboration between BYD and Azerbaijan also includes future plans for local production, underscoring BYD’s commitment to expanding its footprint in sustainable public transportation solutions globally.
In June, BYD reported sales of 1,447 commercial vehicles, contributing to a cumulative total of 5,838 units in the first half of the year. Passenger car sales, BYD’s primary business segment, reached 340,211 units in June and 1,607,145 units for the first half of the year.
