CATL and BYD, two prominent Chinese battery manufacturers, are on the brink of launching groundbreaking electric vehicle (EV) batteries capable of ultra-fast charging, potentially reshaping the global automotive landscape.
Recent reports suggest that these new batteries could fully charge an EV in just 10 minutes, a remarkable advancement that could significantly enhance the appeal and practicality of electric vehicles.

CATL, known for its innovative battery solutions, recently introduced the Shenxing battery, which features a 5C charge rate and is currently powering the Zeekr 001 EV. This battery can reportedly charge from 10% to 80% in a mere 11.5 minutes, offering an impressive range of 472 km according to the CLTC standard.
Building on this success, CATL is now gearing up to launch the Qilin battery in the second half of 2024. This next-generation battery, utilizing a nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry, is expected to boast an even faster 6C charge rate, further enhancing the rapid charging capabilities of EVs.

At the same time, BYD is preparing to unveil its second-generation Blade Battery, which is expected to coincide with the launch of CATL’s Qilin battery. The new Blade Battery is anticipated to deliver increased range at a lower cost, potentially making electric vehicles more affordable for consumers.
The timing of these battery launches is particularly significant, as the United States and the European Union have recently imposed tariffs on Chinese EV imports. However, the introduction of high-speed charging batteries like CATL’s Qilin and BYD’s Blade could help mitigate the impact of these tariffs, especially in the European market.
