In a pioneering move towards sustainable energy practices, Select, a subsidiary of Laing O’Rourke, has forged a strategic partnership with Zenobē, an energy storage specialist. This collaboration aims to revolutionize the construction industry by repurposing second-life batteries into portable energy storage units, offering a cleaner alternative to diesel generators.

Under this partnership, Zenobē will supply Select with 20 portable batteries converted from electric bus batteries. These units are designed to store approximately 150kWh of energy each, providing a robust and eco-friendly power source for various applications such as construction, lifting solutions, and electric vehicle charging. Notably, these batteries can also be integrated with the local grid to augment power supply.

Ian Fleming, Select’s Product Lead, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Our collaboration with Zenobē represents another pivotal moment in our journey to redefining the future of energy storage in the construction industry. It emphasises Select’s commitment to innovation, sustainability solutions and resilience, setting a new standard for the industry and empowering a cleaner, more reliable construction landscape.”

Steven Meersman, Co-Founder Director of Zenobē, highlighted the broader impact of their technology, saying, “Our portable batteries, made from refurbished electric bus batteries, provide Select Power with a ready and proven solution for their customers to decarbonise their projects. Our flexible funding and technical support provide the technological and sustainability benefits without the need of ownership.” He added, “Having already been used in the film, events, and logistics industries to much success, we are looking forward to seeing them becoming a regular sight, providing clean and reliable power to construction projects around the country.”
