In a bold move towards sustainable maritime transport, Vessev, a pioneering electric boat developer, has emerged from stealth mode to reveal its innovative vessel, the VS—9. This state-of-the-art electric hydrofoil boat promises a smooth, efficient, and eco-friendly sea travel experience, marking the company’s ambitious entry into the maritime sector.

Formerly known as Seachange, Vessev was founded in Auckland, New Zealand, by two visionary individuals with backgrounds in innovation, including a stint at Apple. Their flagship vessel, the VS—9, is currently undergoing sea trials, showcasing its futuristic design and cutting-edge technology.

The VS—9 utilizes hydrofoil technology, allowing it to “fly” above the water, resulting in exceptional efficiency. With plans to expand into larger vessels capable of transporting up to 100 passengers, Vessev aims to revolutionize the way people travel by sea.

Eric Laakmann, co-founder and CEO of Vessev, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “We are in the earliest stage of a global transition to sustainable energy use.” He highlighted their partnership with NetZero Maritime, a green technology team at Fullers360, New Zealand’s largest ferry operator, as a significant step towards accelerating the adoption of eco-friendly technologies in the maritime industry.

The VS—9 boasts impressive performance metrics, with a range of 50 nautical miles and the ability to recharge at any marina plug. Its electric motor reduces energy consumption by up to 95%, offering passengers a quieter and more enjoyable ride.

Vessev’s innovative approach has garnered attention, with the company already planning to scale its technology into larger vessels. The VS—18, a 100-passenger electric hydrofoil boat, is in development and is expected to further enhance seakeeping capabilities and unlock new opportunities for sustainable maritime transport.

With certification expected later this year, Vessev is on track to commence commercial operations with Fullers360 in New Zealand. As the company sets its sights on a cleaner, more efficient maritime future, the VS—9 stands as a testament to their vision and commitment to revolutionizing sea travel.
