Lexus is set to introduce new hybrid and fully electric powertrains for its ES sedan. Recent trademark filings reveal the arrival of the ES350h, ES350e, and ES500e variants, signaling an upgrade from the current ES250, ES350, and ES300h models.
The ‘h’ designation will denote hybrids, ‘h+’ for PHEVs, and ‘e’ for fully electric models, according to Lexus’ naming convention. The ES350h is expected to inherit the AWD self-charging hybrid system from the RX350h, positioning it as a step up from the existing FWD-only ES300h.
Meanwhile, the ES350e and ES500e are anticipated to feature fully electric powertrains. Despite limited information on the electric powertrain specifics, the ES500e is likely to become the flagship model of the ES lineup, as per reports from AutoGuide, which first uncovered the patents.
Speculation about a fully electric Lexus ES surfaced in December 2021, when a teaser image showcased a midsize sedan as part of Lexus’ future EV lineup. The sedan bore a resemblance to the current ES, albeit with redesigned elements like slimmer LED headlights and a revamped front bumper sans the iconic “Spindle grille.”
Although the sixth-generation Lexus ES debuted in 2018 and received a mid-lifecycle update in 2021, a second facelift could be in the works to accommodate the new hybrid and EV powertrains. While 2025 was initially speculated as the ideal time for a new generation launch, the teaser suggests otherwise.
Lexus aims to offer a fully electric option for each of its models by 2030, with the ultimate goal of transitioning to an EV-only brand by 2035.
