Electrify America Accelerates EV Charging Network Expansion, Targets 5,000 DC Fast Chargers by Year-End

Electrify America (EA) has made significant strides in expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with plans to further bolster its network in 2024. After increasing its total number of chargers to over 4,000 in 2023, the company aims to reach 5,000 DC fast chargers by the end of this year.

The company’s growth has been impressive, with customer charging sessions more than doubling from 5.3 million in 2022 to 10.9 million in 2023, marking a 106% increase year-over-year. Electrify America’s EV charging network now spans over 900 stations across 47 US states, the District of Columbia, and six Canadian provinces, with recent expansions into Hawaii and North Dakota.

In a bid to enhance customer experience, EA has upgraded over 680 underperforming legacy chargers to its next-gen charger, improving reliability and efficiency. The company also plans to open larger charging stations and expand its Plug&Charge payment technology, which has been praised by users like Volkswagen ID.4 owner.

One notable development is the launch of EA’s first indoor charging station in San Francisco in February, featuring 20 DC fast chargers capable of delivering up to 350 kW of power. These stations offer amenities such as temperature-controlled lounges, vending machines, restrooms, and wifi, hinting at a potential future trend in charging station design.

In alignment with the federal government’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, Electrify America has been awarded several projects. In 2023, the company secured four NEVI projects – one in Colorado and three in Pennsylvania. In 2024, EA has already won six NEVI projects, including one in Pennsylvania (second round), four in Colorado (second round), and one in Virginia.
