Toyota recently showcased its commitment to electric mobility at Auto China in Beijing, unveiling two new battery electric vehicle (BEV) models developed in collaboration with joint venture partners FAW and GAC. The electric mid-size SUVs, named bZ3C and bZ3X, represent Toyota’s strategic push into the rapidly evolving Chinese EV market.

The bZ3C crossover, developed in partnership with BYD and FAW, is the production version of the bZ Sport Crossover Concept, retaining much of its original design. Minor adjustments were made, including the replacement of cameras with exterior mirrors. Notably, the production model features a lidar sensor on the roof, enhancing its technological capabilities.

In contrast, the bZ3X SUV, developed with GAC, features a distinctive design with a steeply raked rear window, targeting a different audience than the lifestyle-oriented bZ3C. Unlike some competitors, Toyota ensured that the bZ3X stands apart from the bZ3C, offering unique appeal and functionality.

While specific details about the drive systems have not been disclosed, speculation suggests that both models may utilize blade batteries from BYD subsidiary FinDreams. This speculation stems from FAW-Toyota’s previous collaboration on the bZ3 electric saloon, which featured electric motors and LFP cells from BYD.

The technical specifications for both models are yet to be revealed, with Toyota expected to announce them closer to the anticipated 2025 market launch. In the US, Toyota is also making strides in the EV segment, with plans to offer two large electric SUVs with three rows of seats. Production of these models will be based in Indiana and Kentucky, where Toyota is converting its factories for EV production.
