Volkswagen is ramping up its collaboration with Mobileye to introduce advanced automated driving features across its premium brands and light commercial vehicles, according to a press release from the Volkswagen Group.
The partnership aims to integrate Mobileye’s SuperVision and Chauffeur platforms, providing technologies for partially and highly automated driving. This initiative will enable Group brands such as Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Porsche to swiftly implement new driving functions, including extended Level 2 features and, in the future, Level 3 capabilities. Level 3 automation allows vehicles to temporarily take over driving tasks in specific areas, relieving drivers from continuous monitoring.
Christian Senger, Board Member for Autonomous Driving, Mobility and Transport at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, highlighted the significance of partnerships in deploying autonomous shuttles at scale. He stated, “We are developing the first fully autonomous mass-produced vehicle, and Mobileye is bringing the digital driver on board.”
The collaboration will also see Mobileye supplying additional technology components for autonomous driving in Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, focusing on achieving Level 4 automation – “fully automated driving.” This aligns with Volkswagen’s goal, through its subsidiary Volkswagen ADMT, to develop self-driving ID. Buzz vehicles for mobility and transportation services.
Oliver Blume, CEO of the Volkswagen Group and Porsche AG, expressed the company’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology to customers worldwide. He stated, “New automated driving functions will significantly boost convenience and safety. These functions, which will be tailored to our brands and products, will make every trip a personal, individual experience.”
Amnon Shashua, President and CEO of Mobileye, shared his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Through these programs, we see Volkswagen Group leading the industry in putting AI-powered advanced driver assistance technology in the hands of consumers globally and developing new services with autonomous vehicles.”
