Maryland-based ION Storage Systems has reached a significant milestone in the development of its unique solid-state batteries (SSBs), marking a major step forward in the advancement of battery technology. The company’s anodeless and compressionless SSBs have successfully achieved and exceeded 125 cycles with less than 5% capacity degradation, signaling the potential for over 1,000 cycles in future deployments.

Solid-state batteries have garnered considerable attention due to their promise of enhanced safety and durability compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. ION’s SSBs distinguish themselves by utilizing a unique 3-D ceramic structure in place of conventional anode materials like graphite. This design not only improves safety by reducing the need for protective gear and cooling but also makes the batteries more cost-effective and easier to manufacture at scale.

Initially targeting the US military market, ION Storage Systems is collaborating with the US Department of Defense to test and refine its solid-state battery technology before expanding into other sectors, including electric vehicles (EVs) and long-duration energy storage.

ION’s solid-state battery stands out as the only compressionless SSB technology to meet the fast-charge goals set by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy and the US Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office at room temperature.

Commenting on this milestone, Ricky Hanna, CEO of ION Storage Systems, expressed his vision for the company’s technology, stating, “Since day one, our objective has been to craft an advanced solid-state battery that offers a more powerful, reliable, and safer battery manufactured at scale, and this achievement is a pivotal step toward that vision.”
