Electric vehicles accounted for nearly 65 percent of all new car sales in Norway in 2021. In 2021, Norwegian dealers sold a total of 176,276 cars, of which 65 percent were electric vehicles. This is the data published by the country’s Road Federation.
The number of new electric vehicle sales increased 11 percentage points from 202 when they accounted for 54 percent of all new car sales.
The Tesla Model 3 is the most popular choice among new buyers. Toyota’s hybrid RAV4, the only car with an internal combustion engine to make the top ten best-selling list in the country. Volkswagen ID.4 is in third place and Polestar 2 is at number 10.

The Norwegian EV Association told Reuters that electric vehicle sales could account for 80 per cent of overall sales by 2022 – as long as a chip shortage does not cause further delivery delays.
As in 2020, subsidies from the state made sales of electric vehicles this year experience a significant increase. Buyers of electric vehicles do not have to pay the taxes levied on traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. In 2021, the country’s federal government lost an estimated $3.41 billion in tax revenue to push its plan to end all sales of cars with internal combustion engines by 2025.
