IF Metall’s contract secretary, Veli-Pekka SƤikkƤlƤ, indicated that the strike could be resolved if Tesla follows a model previously employed by Amazon. In 2020, when Amazon entered the Swedish market, it hired a logistics contractor with an existing collective agreement with the Transport Workers Union, effectively settling the labor-related challenges.
The nuances of the compromise, however, present complexities. The impact of IF Metall’s strike primarily affects Tesla’s service centers in Sweden and the mechanics affiliated with the union. Notably, over 50% of Tesla mechanics in Sweden reportedly are not IF Metall members, and a significant portion has expressed reluctance toward joining a collective agreement.
The ongoing standoff revolves around IF Metall’s demand for Tesla to sign a collective agreement, a common practice in Swedish labor relations. Allegedly, Tesla Sweden has received instructions from Elon Musk not to engage in any collective agreement, further complicating the resolution process.
Even among Tesla employees who are IF Metall members, the union reportedly faces challenges garnering widespread support. Some IF Metall members employed by Tesla have not participated in the strike and were allegedly excluded from the Swedish union.
