Leading Chinese electric mobility manufacturer, NIU, renowned for its electric scooters, mopeds, and e-bikes, has entered the electric motorcycle arena with the debut of the XQi3. This new electric motorcycle offers a peak power of 8 kW, a rugged off-road frame and suspension, and presents riders with three distinct Cyberpunk-inspired style variations.
The XQi3 boasts three color options, each altering the appearance of the metal plate covering the battery pack’s sides. Despite the cosmetic distinctions, the off-white, purple, and yellow hues collectively infuse the XQi3 with a blend of retro-futuristic aesthetics and a hint of Cyberpunk flair.
Accentuating its visual appeal are features such as a circular LED headlight mounted to KKE upside-down forks, a lengthy bench seat, and minimalist front and rear mudguards.
The NIU XQi3 is available in two closely aligned versions: the XQi3 Street and the XQi3 Wild. Both variants seemingly share identical hardware, featuring a motor rated for 3,500 W of continuous power, capable of reaching 8,000 W with the Ultra Boost functionality.
Differentiating the Street and Wild models is their speed capabilities and intended usage. The Wild, tailored for off-road adventures, achieves speeds up to 75 km/h (46.6 mph), while the Street variant is restricted to 45 km/h (28 mph) for urban commuting.
Key specifications of the NIU XQi3 include a mid-drive motor, a power output of 3.5 kW nominal / 8 kW peak, a weight of 76 kg, a 72 V, 32 Ah battery with a claimed range of up to 90 km, ground clearance of 237 mm, and a seat height of 875 mm. Notably, the forged aluminum frame enhances the bike’s off-road durability.
NIU emphasizes the XQi3’s dirt-ready capabilities with its ground clearance and durable frame. The electric motorcycle also integrates smartphone-connected technology, enabling riders to utilize the TFT screen for notifications, calls, route tracking, and motorcycle unlocking via NFC.
In terms of market alternatives, the Sur Ron Light Bee X, priced at $4,400, offers a more economical option but with a lower power output. Conversely, Cake’s Kalk, boasting nearly double the performance at 5.8 kW nominal and 11 kW peak, carries a higher starting price of $8,970.
The NIU XQi3 is slated to hit NIU dealerships in the United States and Europe in March 2024, with a starting price of $5,499 for both the Street and Wild versions. European customers can acquire the electric dirt bike for €5,999.
