Volkswagen, known for its nostalgia and reviving old vehicle nameplates, could be setting its sights on an electric version of the iconic Golf GTI, a beloved hot hatch in the automotive world. Recent trademark filings have surfaced, revealing a redesigned GTI logo, potentially indicating VW’s intentions to electrify the famed model and leverage the GTI reputation to generate excitement for its upcoming electric vehicles.
The trademark application, filed with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office, showcases a refreshed GTI logo that retains the well-known lettering but replaces the “I” with a lightning bolt. This adaptation is likely an acknowledgment of the traditional GTI acronym, which stands for “Grand Touring Injection” – a term not applicable to electric vehicles that do not rely on fuel injection.
While speculation is rife, it is reasonable to assume that if Volkswagen proceeds with an electric Golf GTI, it may utilise the concept of the ID.2all as a starting point. The ID.2all, though still in the concept phase, is projected to have a base price of around €25,000. However, details on how VW would elevate the ID.2all to match the high standards set by the Golf GTI are yet to be revealed.
Should an electric Golf GTI materialise in the future, it will face formidable competition from the likes of the forthcoming Renault 5 EV, the recently upgraded electric Mini Cooper, and the Fiat and Abarth 500e.
Although there are signs pointing towards an electric GTI trim on the horizon, a full-fledged Golf GTI EV may take longer to materialise. VW remains committed to its petrol-powered Golf GTI variant until at least 2030. However, the 50th-anniversary celebration of the Golf GTI in Europe in 2025 could provide Volkswagen with a perfect opportunity to unveil a special-edition electric concept or build anticipation for an electric production Golf GTI.
While VW’s existing performance EVs are labelled with GTX branding, it remains uncertain whether this will be replaced by the new GTI logo or serve another purpose for different trim levels or variants. There is a possibility that GTX could resemble Kia’s GT-Line trims, which offer slightly less power but a more affordable option compared to their GT counterparts. As the electric future continues to unfold, enthusiasts and industry watchers eagerly await further updates on VW’s plans for an electrified Golf GTI.
