Luxury automobile manufacturer Porsche has announced a significant increase in its worldwide vehicle sales, marking a positive trend for the second quarter of 2023. The company delivered a remarkable 86,587 units during this period, representing a notable 11.8 percent year-over-year surge. Furthermore, Porsche’s sales for the first half of the year amounted to 167,354 cars, exhibiting a remarkable 14.7 percent rise compared to the previous year.
Expressing satisfaction with the results, Porsche highlighted that sales growth was observed in all of its sales regions. This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering the global challenges faced by the automotive industry. However, amidst this success, the brand’s electric flagship, the Porsche Taycan, experienced a decline in sales for the fifth consecutive quarter.
In the first quarter of 2023, Porsche sold 8,839 units of the Taycan, encompassing all versions such as the Taycan, Taycan Cross Turismo, and Taycan GTS. This figure represents a decline of six percent compared to the same period last year. The Porsche Taycan’s market share also witnessed a decrease, accounting for 10.2 percent of the brand’s total volume, compared to nearly 12.1 percent in the previous year.
Porsche attributed the decline in Taycan sales to ongoing supply chain issues, which have hampered the production and delivery of the electric model. With hopes for improvements in the upcoming quarter, the company anticipates a potential rebound for the Taycan’s sales in the third quarter.
Examining the specifics of Porsche’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in the second quarter of 2023, the Taycan achieved sales of 8,839 units globally, experiencing a decline of 6 percent. Notably, the United States accounted for 1,635 of these sales, reflecting a significant decrease of 35 percent compared to the previous year.
When considering the cumulative sales of the Porsche Taycan so far this year, the figures reveal a decline of nearly five percent year-over-year, amounting to 17,991 units. Despite this decline, the Taycan still accounts for 10.8 percent of the brand’s total volume.
Analyzing Porsche’s sales performance across different models in the first and second quarters of 2023, notable growth was observed in several areas. The Macan exhibited a significant increase of 26 percent with sales reaching 47,755 units. The Cayenne, another popular model, experienced a growth rate of 12 percent, delivering 46,884 vehicles. Additionally, the iconic 911 recorded a surge of 21 percent, with 26,124 units sold. Meanwhile, the Panamera achieved a sales increase of 13 percent, reaching 17,565 vehicles. The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman models also witnessed a rise of 13 percent, with sales totaling 11,035 units. In total, Porsche sold 167,354 vehicles during this period, representing a remarkable 15 percent overall growth.
It is worth noting that in 2022, Porsche faced challenges in the electric vehicle market, delivering 34,801 Taycan units, experiencing a 16 percent decline compared to the previous year. This translated to 11.2 percent of the brand’s total volume at the time.
Looking ahead, Porsche remains optimistic about the future sales prospects of the Taycan. With over 114,000 Taycans sold worldwide to date, the company expects to see an improvement throughout the year, potentially reaching a target of 35,000 to 40,000 units sold in 2023.
While Porsche does not disclose the number of plug-in hybrid sales, such as the Cayenne and Panamera, it is anticipated that these models also contribute significantly to the brand’s overall sales volume, potentially accounting for a noteworthy share.
