owards achieving its green development goals, the Rwandan government has announced plans to introduce 200 electric buses in the capital city of Kigali. Spearheaded by Vivo Energy and the Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB), the ambitious project aims to transform public transportation while setting an inspiring example for other African cities to follow.
Collaborating closely with the Ministry of Infrastructure and the City of Kigali, Vivo Energy has successfully completed a comprehensive feasibility study on the electrification of Kigali’s public bus fleet. Although specific details regarding the bus manufacturer and delivery timeline are yet to be revealed, the initiative’s implementation is expected to progress rapidly.

Kigali Mayor, Pudence Rubingisa, expressed confidence in the upcoming deployment, stating, “Everything necessary for the seamless delivery and introduction of the electric buses will be put in place in the coming months.” This assertion underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering sustainable transportation solutions that combat the adverse effects of climate change on both its people and economy.
Hans Paulsen, the Executive Vice President for East & Southern Africa at Vivo Energy, highlighted the significance of this endeavor, stating, “Rwanda’s ambitious green development goals will not only drive the nation’s resilience to climate change but also serve as a model for other African cities.” By introducing electric buses in Kigali, the initiative not only promotes sustainable transportation but also paves the way for similar endeavors across the continent.
